Dogtown

Gone are the junkyards and growling mutts. In their place are the modern lofts and restored Victorians.

Welcome to Dogtown

There are many theories as to how Dogtown got its nickname. One of the most popular is that this small section of West Oakland was once notorious for its roaming packs of stray dogs. Whether true or not, Dogtown is now a neighborhood undergoing change. Gone are the junkyards and growling mutts. In their place are the modern lofts and restored Victorians that make up Dogtown real estate. An unsightly freeway was replaced by a wide boulevard with an inviting landscaped median.

Dogtown and the wider West Oakland area have a colorful history that explains its modern diversity. In the mid-1800s this area was populated by railroad workers who had emigrated from all over the world. During World War II, the shipyard industry brought further variety to the locality.

A dynamic neighborhood citizenry keeps everything from recycling programs to local cleanups alive and active. Development plans are very optimistic about the future for this area. A new community park complete with urban garden recently opened.

This is a great place to check out for those looking for good value in the Bay Area and would like to participate in the ongoing dialogue fueling Dogtown's revitalization.
