Feng Shui - Creating Harmony in the Home

Feng shui originated in China and has been used for thousands of years to promote harmony and balance in living spaces. It maintains that the orientation of structures and the placement of objects can affect the flow of energy and the well-being of the occupants. The core principles of feng shui are not mysterious. Its central concept – to follow the laws of nature – is rooted in common sense. "Feng," means wind, and "shui," means water and according to the tradition, human life connects to and flows with the surrounding environment, like wind and water.

The bagua is the feng shui energy map and is the Chinese word for eight principles. Each of the eight areas relates to a different life circumstance, such as family, wealth, or career. The ninth area is at the center of the bagua map and represents overall wellness.

The five elements in feng shui are earth, metal, water, wood, and fire and are drawn from Taoist tradition. They represent the interrelated aspects of life that should be in balance with one another. Each element is associated with a specific color, shape, and material, and can be used to enhance a space. For instance, the water element is associated with flow and movement, and is represented by the color blue and curvilinear shapes.

Here are a some suggestions based on feng shui principles to bring balance and harmony to your home:

  1. Clear out clutter – A key principle of Feng Shui is that clutter blocks the flow of energy in a space, leading to stress, anxiety, and other negative emotions. This will help clear out stagnant energy and create more room for beneficial energy to flow.

  2. Choose colors with care – Certain colors are associated with different emotions and can impact our mood and energy levels. In general, cool colors like blue and green are calming and soothing, while warm colors like red and orange can be more energizing. Use these colors strategically to align with the various activities in your home.

  3. Add plants – Plants are a great way to bring the natural world into your home and create a sense of tranquility. They also help to purify the air and reduce stress levels. Plants with rounded leaves are said to encourage harmonious relationships, while plants like sansevieria, with its sword-like leaf shape, offer a feeling of protection in an entryway or hall.

  4. Create a focal point – In each room, choose a focal point that draws the eye and creates a sense of balance. This could be artwork, a piece of furniture, or a window with a beautiful view.

  5. Use strategic lighting – Set a positive ambiance by choosing and positioning lighting to optimize a room’s function and feel. Natural light brings a reliable energy lift.

  6. Use natural materials – Incorporating wood, stone, and metal into your decor can help create a sense of grounding and connection to the natural world. Avoid plastic and other synthetic materials as much as possible, as these can create a sense of disconnection and unease.

  7. Enhance your home's entry – This sets a tone of welcome for you and your guests. It’s also the connection between your intimate space and the outside world.
The command position should be where you spend most of your time in a room. This is a spot in the room that is the farthest from the door and not directly in line with it. This position is optimal for the desk in your office or the bed in your bedroom.

While the precepts of feng shui may seem abstract and mystical, there is scientific evidence to support its principles. A cluttered environment can have a negative impact on mental health and productivity according to a study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology. Research has also found that exposure to green spaces and natural light is associated with lower levels of stress, improved cognitive function, and a reduced risk of developing chronic diseases.
