Imagination Runs Wild at the DeRome House Social Club House
Editor’s note: The East Bay has a stunningly spectacular mix of homes, and some stand out. We’ll periodically profile the Red Oak Realty listings that stand above and beyond in this blog, starting with the magnificent, imagination-firing DeRome House.
Nestled just east of Emeryville in Oakland’s Paradise Park neighborhood sits the spectacular DeRome House, an intricate Victorian wonderland compound featuring a restored, 5,356-square-foot, three-story, seven-bed, five-bath, four-fireplace masterpiece on a third of an acre.
The property at 1076 59th Street offered by Red Oak Realty agent Kathleen Wilson is taking offers through this Wednesday, October 29. In a unique mix of historic and hip, the home spurs an East Bay imagination to take flight.
Built in 1886 by Louis de Rome, partner in a San Francisco brass and bronze foundry who moved the business to the property after the 1906 earthquake, the home carries a rich bit of East Bay history. Members of the de Rome family lived in the home until the seventies.
Recently restored -- including a new roof, exterior paint, updated bathrooms and kitchen and more -- the home features a diverse set of rooms, which, unlike many homes that now hit the market, feature walls painted in vibrant jewel tones.
The property also includes two separate duplex homes with their own gardens at 1,060 square feet and 645 square feet.
Imagination Running Wild
The corner lot runs to 15,400 square feet. “Where do you find a lot that big to let your imagination run wild,” Kathleen says.
In many ways, seller Leann Calixtro designed the home to ignite creativity.
Leann, who raised four young children with her husband here in the 17 years since she bought it -- poured her soul and creativity in the home. In work over the years, she highlighted its diverse spaces, both inside and out, which came to life at legendary Halloween parties and other house parties she held.
“We hosted countless gatherings: block parties, movie nights, book clubs, billiard nights, and Halloween balls,” Leann writes in her letter to prospective buyers. “It was -- and is -- a creative incubator. I called it, affectionately, the DeRome House Social Club.”

An example of events Leann and housemates held at the house include a Jazz & Billiards Night featuring Leann’s jazz band Lulu & the Rent Party held as recently as August 14.
Above all, Leann says she loves the diversity of spaces the home offers, from the parlor and its beet-colored walls to the casual and cozy backyard to the sunny and cheerful kitchen to the quiet and timeless music room with piano and floor-to-ceiling bookcases.
Taller than any homes around, the house collects tons of sunlight, something she, her family and pets loved, she added. (Note: resident goats, Tulip and Banjo, are amenable to staying with the home through the sale.)
This all added up to a vibrant, attractive place. “Everybody I know wants to have their birthday there,” Leann says.
A list of the home’s features highlight the vibrant, cool lifestyle it offers:
- Copper Japanese soaking tub
- Soapstone counters and large copper sink in the kitchen
- 80 arch-top windows
- Paris-style, third-floor atelier with two skylights
- Witch-cap roof
- Front portico with Corinthian columns
- Live Oak tree framing the home’s entrance
- Seven gables with bronze metallic spires and drop-finials
Soon, another family will be fielding visit requests.
