Can you spend a full Saturday in San Leandro without getting back in your car? Coffee somewhere, lunch somewhere else, a show at night, all of it on foot? Ask that question in 2023 and the honest answer was no. Ask it in August 2026 and the answer has quietly changed, and the reason has nothing to do with any single new restaurant. It has to do with where four of them landed relative to each other.

Four Separate San Leandros

San Leandro has never lacked for good food. It has lacked for food that sits close together. Downtown near BART, Marina Square along the water, Bayfair to the south, and the industrial pocket behind the Westgate Center have run as four separate commercial worlds for decades, each with its own regulars who rarely cross into the others.

That separation isn't an accident. It's built on institutions old enough to not need each other. Horatio's has served the San Leandro Marina since 1979, decades before anyone downtown was thinking about foot traffic. Drake's Brewing Company started brewing in San Leandro in 1989, tucked behind a Walmart in a stretch of the city most residents drive past without a second look. Neither business was ever waiting on downtown to catch up. They built their own gravity.

What Landed Between February and Now

Downtown is where the change actually happened this year, and it happened in a tight window. Here's the sequence:

• February 2026 — As Kneaded Bakery expanded into a full café inside the San Leandro Main Library at 300 Estudillo Avenue, extending its bread and pastry program into sandwiches and salads.
• March 18 and 19, 2026 — Philz Coffee opened its 82nd store at 1194 East 14th Street, inside the new Centro Callan development. The soft opening ran the day before a ribbon cutting where Mayor Juan González gave remarks alongside representatives from County Supervisor Tam and State Representative Greyson's offices.
• 2026 — TOGO's Sandwiches left its longtime Westgate location and reopened in Marina Square, where it's already back in business.
• Coming soon — Lavanta Mediterranean is preparing to take over the former Moussaka space on Dutton Avenue, with a previewed menu that includes whole red snapper, rabbit, cornish hen, and goat.

Philz didn't treat the opening like a routine store launch. The café includes custom mural work that references cherries, dahlias, stock cars, and other pieces of San Leandro's identity rather than a generic third-place aesthetic.

That's Jessica Mitchell, Philz Coffee's Vice President of Marketing, on the opening. The line matters less as marketing copy and more as a signal that the company treated San Leandro as a specific place to court, not a slot to fill on an expansion map.

The Math of 198 New Front Doors

Centro Callan is the piece that explains the timing. The development at 100 Callan Avenue turned the long-vacant former CVS and Longs Drug site into an apartment building with close to 200 units, finished in spring 2025 with residents moving in that June. Sprouts Farmers Market and Philz Coffee sit on the ground floor beneath them.

Run the numbers and Philz's bet stops looking speculative. Nearly 200 households now live directly above the shop. That's not a company hoping downtown foot traffic materializes. That's a company opening where the customers already sleep. It also happens to be the Philz location closest to the company's own roasting plant, which means the coffee arriving in San Leandro travels a shorter distance than it does to most of the chain's other 81 stores.

Walk two blocks from Centro Callan and you're at the library, where As Kneaded now serves lunch inside a civic building instead of a leased storefront. A civic address is a different kind of bet than a commercial one. It's the difference between a café that has to hit sales targets to survive and one that operates more like a public amenity, which is part of why library cafés tend to outlast standalone shops on the same block when things get lean.

Put those two blocks together with TOGO's back in Marina Square and Lavanta's incoming menu on Dutton, and downtown San Leandro has, for the first time in years, enough density that a resident can string together a real afternoon without resetting the car in between stops.

The Places That Never Needed the Corridor

None of this touches the businesses that were never counting on downtown's foot traffic to begin with.

Top Hatters Kitchen & Bar, a few blocks over, named its cocktail list after hat terminology as a nod to the original Top Hatters hat shop, run by Ted and Marie Lee for 65 years, first in Oakland and later in San Leandro. That's a business built on a family legacy stretching back decades, not on this year's development cycle.

Drake's Barrel House is the clearer case. The taproom sits at 1933 Davis Street, tucked behind the Westgate Center, in the same building where Drake's has brewed since the company started in 1989 under the name Lind Brewing. The business was sold to the owners of Triple Rock Brewery and Alehouse in 2008, and the Barrel House itself has poured beer onsite since 2011. Twenty-four rotating taps run through flagships, sours, and barrel-aged releases most drinkers won't find anywhere else, backed by a Brew Kitchen serving tots, burgers, and sandwiches. Brewmaster Devo Buckingham runs a team of more than 30 people out of that building. The taproom closes the first Friday of every month, not for slow business but to host private fundraiser nights for local nonprofits.

Drake's doesn't need to be near a coffee shop or a sandwich counter. It's a destination on its own, the way it's been for 15 years since the taproom opened, and the way the underlying brewery has been since Roger Lind first started it in 1989.

What's Actually Left on August's Calendar

Downtown's other constant this year is the Historic BAL Theatre at 14808 East 14th Street, which has kept a packed marquee all month. Here's what's still ahead before September:

The Downtown San Leandro Farmers Market keeps its own weekly rhythm outside the library at 300 Estudillo Avenue, running every Wednesday night from 4 p.m. through mid-October. Second Fridays, the recurring night market hosted by Downtown San Leandro and West Coast Makers in Butterfly Plaza downtown, opened its August installment on the 8th with a Lucky 88 Market, following the same pattern that brought a Lunar New Year celebration in February, a Women's HERStory Fest in March, and a Spring Fling in April. The series will land again next month, same plaza, same Friday-night format that's carried it for years.

What This Adds Up To

None of this replaces what San Leandro already had. The Marina is still the Marina. Drake's is still a destination you drive to, not a stop you stumble into. What changed is narrower and more useful than a citywide transformation: for the first time, a resident who lives near East 14th Street can get coffee, lunch, and dinner within a short walk, on the same afternoon, without the corridor emptying out in between. That's a small thing to say about a city, and it's also the thing that wasn't true two years ago.
