How Red Oak Became Green-Certified and Carbon-Neutral (Again)

Today Red Oak renewed the green certification of its Montclair office. Once again, all four of our offices are green-certified.

We strongly recommend that all businesses ensure they are as “green” as possible, so we wanted to share how we did it. It’s easy to do and worth each and every step.

Green technologies change frequently, so when it came time to renew our certification, we worked closely with the California Green Business Network to ensure that we continue to maintain high standards, from our water usage, to cleaning products, to properly sorted waste, to energy-efficient lighting.

One of the new requirements is to use 100% renewable energy, so we moved to PG&E’s Renewable 100 plan. If you’re an East Bay company, learn more about their renewable plans here and get help switching here. Note that all Berkeley residences and businesses already use 100% renewable energy.

Red Oak has been buying carbon offsets to make our facilities carbon neutral. We know that this can be an unreliable method to address the climate crisis, so the GBN helped us locate offset providers that are accepted as trustworthy and that meet the measure of carbon offsets: Carbon Lighthouse Association and Zero Foodprint. These have direct methods to decrease emissions in a trackable and measurable way.

Red Oak now purchases offsets from the Carbon Lighthouse Association, helping to ensure that we make the greatest impact possible.

We hope that you consider taking your own “green” steps. Check out other green-certified businesses and reach out to the GBN for help!
