An Overview of Some of the Best Ways to Commute to And from the East Bay

Like everywhere in the Bay Area, East Bay commutes can drive you mad, literally and figuratively.

Many East Bay residents commute to San Francisco and the Peninsula, the epicenter of the region’s technology scene and where many jobs exist. This creates a unique scenario for many East Bay commuters to the city -- while they live closer to wine country escapes and the Sierras, they pay for it on workdays.

The good news is that the East Bay has an abundance of commuting solutions, but they can be difficult to navigate. That’s why we created this post -- to give you a broad overview of the commuting options at your fingertips.

Casual Carpool

Perhaps the best commuting option for East Bayers with a weekday morning city commute, Casual Carpool offers a top-notch collaboration: an unequivocal win-win. Drivers without passengers need two to access HOV lanes and a quicker drive in, and commuters need a ride. Casual carpool riders often contribute a nominal amount -- $1.

Located at 17 convenient waiting-and-pick-up spots in the Inner East Bay from Richmond and Berkeley to Alameda and East Oakland, the system operates as a true community-driven enterprise from 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on weekdays (when carpool lanes are active).

For those looking for not-so-casual carpools, several sites help match riders with drivers, including 511 and Scoop.

Transbay Buses

There are more transbay public bus routes than you may think. In all, AC Transit operates 30 transbay routes that ferry passengers all three East Bay bridges -- the Bay Bridge, the San Mateo Bridge and Dumbarton Bridge. These routes offer express service from the East Bay into SF and the Peninsula, including stops deep in the Berkeley and Oakland hills such as Kensington.

Even if you live far from transbay bus stops, AC Transit features stops at several East Bay Park & Ride stops that make it convenient to park, and, well, ride.

You might not need to go the public bus route if you work at one of the growing number of big firms who offer private transbay bus service to and from the East Bay. Google, Ebay, Facebook and Genentech are among the Bay Area companies who offer this service.

BART

BART offers traffic-free rides to San Francisco, but what passengers gain in freedom from traffic stress, they lose in extremely tight quarters with fellow riders. The commuting crush can be just that -- as commuters pack tight into cars at rush hour.

Regardless, BART, with frequent trains at rush hour, gives riders certainty about departure and arrival times, which other East Bay commuting options don’t have as they rely on each day’s particular traffic conditions. In addition, riders at BART’s more far-flung stations have a long ride into the city, but also give ample time to read (or watch TV shows and movies!).

Scooters and Bikes

The rise of dockless e-scooters and e-bikes complement BART trips as riders can conveniently, and in most cases affordably, rent these from near BART stations to complete the final leg of their commute. These make even a mile or two end-commute much easier.

Uber and Lyft have entered the e-scooter and e-bike fray, giving commuters easy access to these vehicles from apps they already have. Lyft, for example, purchased Ford’s GoBikes business earlier this year and rebranded to Bay Wheels, which now integrate with the Clipper card.

Ferries

Among the world’s best commutes, the San Francisco Bay Ferry shuttles commuters between Harbor Bay, Alameda, Jack London Square, and most recently Point Richmond in the East Bay to South San Francisco, the San Francisco Ferry Building and Pier 41 in San Francisco.

Nothing’s better than cruising under the Bay Bridge on a ferry with a beer in hand as the sun sets at the end of a productive day.
