As COVID-19 overtook our lives and businesses, the local restaurant industry responded. Experts emphasized the relative safety of socializing in the fresh air, so ordinances were passed and retrofits were undertaken as the experience of dining out became literal. Tables and chairs were moved to sidewalks and patios, parklets appeared, and many of our East Bay streets took on a Parisian flair. Given the extreme economic challenges, it’s not surprising that we lost a number of excellent eateries. However, many were able to make the pivot, creating inviting outdoor spaces that saved themselves, as well as their patrons’ social lives.
Unsurprisingly, these outdoor spaces continue to be popular with diners. Although stringent regulations are easing, some patrons are concerned about dining indoors. Many prefer to socialize in the fresh air even though it’s not required, and our perfect East Bay weather makes it easy.
