“We seek to provide a safe and affordable living space with meaningful life activity, access to necessary services and support, and an opportunity to earn a dignified income so that residents can become contributing members to the greater Tri-Valley community.” — Goodness Village

The Red Oak Opportunity Foundation (ROOF) recently donated over $100,000 to East Bay nonprofits. In this series of blog posts we profile the recipients of those donations. Learn more and donate to help the community here.

Goodness Village is a planned tiny home neighborhood offering more than shelter for the unhoused. The objective is community.

A resource center provides access and skills training in gardening, building, art, and other activities that encourage connection. Since the housing is permanent, residents have the time and the opportunity to create meaningful and productive lives.

Among other things, staff and volunteers offer mentoring, mental health support, financial literacy skills and family reunification. There are options for vocational training and participation in micro-businesses as well. Many of the residents contribute by helping with things like building maintenance and light landscaping.

CrossWinds Church provided the site, which used to be part of the historic Freisman Dairy property, but the Village has no religious requirements. The construction partners offered their services at discounted rates and donated many of the materials. It’s designed to support individuals who meet the HUD criteria of “chronically homeless,” defined as having no home for at least 12 months.

Resident Carol Romero says, "I've been (in the Bay Area) for 60 years and this is the most secure home feeling I've had" adding that since living at Goodness Village, she's also reconnected with her children and grandchildren.
