“At BHS Jazz, young people find their own voices and express themselves through the medium of jazz. The rigorous program prepares those who would like to pursue a career in music, and builds musicianship, community, and a sense of belonging among all who participate.” —BHS Jazz

The Berkeley High Jazz program is a treasured and relevant resource promoting elite musicianship, creativity, diversity and community involvement. The careers of many notable alumni, including Joshua Redman, Ambrose Akinmusire, James Small, and Elena Pinderhughes, demonstrate its enduring value and significance.
Composed of five jazz bands and a number of small combos, the rigorous program cultivates the talents of promising young musicians. Overseen by trombonist and Berkeley High alum Sarah Cline, workshops and mentorships with professional musicians provide a rich understanding of the musical arts. When the COVID quarantine was in place and the pressure to prepare for performances was on hiatus, Cline reconfigured the curriculum by giving students an opportunity to examine jazz harmony, the theory and practice of how chords are used in jazz music.
The program is actively engaged with the community: Students participate in jazz festivals, hit local stages, and go on international tours. In 2016 the performers traveled to Cuba, explored Afro-Cuban sounds and culture, then opened for the Grammy-winning Pacific Mambo Orchestra.
Through the booking of their student-led combos, players learn about the business side of the music industry and gain skills in negotiation, finance, logistics and management. They’re also given support and college guidance when determining whether to continue their musical education and possible careers. You can even book a combo for your next event!
