This Saturday, April 22, is Earth Day, and it will be a day of celebration, action and awareness for our planet. From beach cleanups to educational workshops, there are plenty of opportunities in the East Bay to get involved, make a difference, and revel in this season of renewal.
In Berkeley, you can start at the Earth Day Clean-up, then hit the Berkeley Bay Festival. They both take place at the Berkeley waterfront. Connect with the local community, enjoy live music, food, hands-on educational activities and free boat rides.
Interested in bouldering? You can help out the Bay Area Climbers Coalition and Adopt-a-Crag. Enjoy the views and help spruce up the Indian Rock and Mortar Rock bouldering area in the Berkeley Hills.
Enjoy a beer at the Westbrae Biergarten and take in Earth Day with Urbanists. Bring your ideas about transit, housing and livability, then engage in discussions about improving sustainability in our cities. (Note - this takes place on 4/23.)
In North Richmond, you can help the Watershed Project care for and protect our watersheds. Earth Day activities include Wildcat Creek clean-up, gardening with native plants, and opening the North Richmond Nature Loop Trail.
Also on 4/23, bring gloves and a trash grabber to pick up litter and join in the clean-up at Emeryville’s Shorebird Park, then stay and connect with the community over refreshments.
There’s plenty of earth love taking place in Oakland. At Jack London Square, Earth Day planting kits will be offered to participants and you can grab a photo op with an Earth Day themed backdrop.
The Environmental Services Stewardship Team will be honoring Earth Day in the Town while cleaning up streets, sidewalks, schools, parks, along with creeks and waterways.
The Friends-Stewards of African American Museum and Library at Oakland (AALMO) is seeking volunteers to help pull weeds and remove leaves and trash. Tools and snacks are provided. You might also want to investigate AAMLO's Seed Lending Library.
Catch part of Earth Month at the Oakland Zoo where each Saturday this month features a different conservation-based theme.
Queer & Well: A QTBIPOC Wellness Fair - Earth Day edition, will feature Cat Brooks, host of KPFA’s Law and Disorder, and the Sogorea Te Land Trust. After the Wellness Fair, stay and frolic at the dance party.
The Citywide Earth Day Clean-up and Fair in Hayward coordinates volunteers to pick-up litter around the city. Register to participate and lunch will be provided at Weekes Park
